TIGO on 3rd April 2010 joined pupils of Rwisirabo Primary School in Kageyo sector, in the Akagera National park in a tree planting exercise. Tigo staff, together with members of the environmental protection club at the school planted 60,000 trees around the school community in an effort of protecting the environment and the national park they live in.
The tree planting initiative is in line with Tigo’s corporate responsibility policy of protecting the environment particularly in places where it operates. For this particular community, it’s made up of returnees from Tanzania refugee camps that were settled in the middle of the national park. The community mainly faced a problem of wild animals that destroy their crops or attack them. The environmental drive by Tigo was to educate the community on the importance of the environment to mankind, how to reduce human carbon foot print and how to live in harmony with the environment. Tigo worked with a local NGO called Rwanda Environmental Awareness Services Organisation Network (REASON), officials from Kayonza District, Umoja Cooperative members, school environment club to plant trees around the school. The children also sensitize their parents on how to protect the environment. Carine, can you also add the link below. http://www.newtimes.co.rw/index.php?issue=14221&article=27731
