The country’s second largest telecom operator by subscriber base, Tigo Rwanda has launched a promotion dubbed ‘Top Up and Drive’ that will see one lucky winner walk away with brand new Toyota Fortuner worth Rwf35 million.
The promotion is part of the company’s celebration of its first year of operations in the country.
To participate in the competition, Tigo’s subscribers are required to accumulate points by topping airtime from as low Rwf500 to increase chances of winning the car.
“Upon recharge of airtime, an instant notification will be sent to the subscriber’s phone alerting the number of points accumulated at that time. One point is an equivalent to one single chance, so the more one tops up the higher the chances one stands,” Tigo’s Marketing Manager, Nina-Claudia Ndabaneze told Business Times.
According to Ndabaneze while points are accumulated on an ongoing basis till the 14th of January 2011, total points are what will be considered for the final draw.
A subscriber is able to find out accumulated points since beginning of promotion by checking their balance.
“Tigo is a dynamic company with dynamic promotions which are actually requested by the market,” said Tigo’s Go to Market Manager, Diego Camberos. However, management said that Data (Modem) subscribers are excluded in the promotion.
The winner of the Toyota Fortuner will be announced on the 15th January 2011.

Tigo Official Launch
On the 23rd of November, Tigo launched commercial operations in Rwanda. During a challenging year where the global financial crisis affected all sectors, including capital investments for most telecom companies, the small new team pulled together to start Millicom International’s operations in Rwanda within the scheduled time of November 2009 as per license agreements. The formal launch event took place on December 4th at the Kigali Serena Hotel. The event was a big success and brought a lot of colour to Kigali city that day. Present from Millicom were Mikael Grahne, CEO, Regis Romero, Cluster Manager Africa, Pablo Guardia Vasquez, GM of Tanzania and Rwanda and Won-Sock Sung, head of Marketing Africa, along with Government Ministers and a long list of A-list guests.
Tigo Rwanda is the first to introduce the lowest denomination scratch card so customers can top up from as little as Rwf300 ($53 cents). Our Tigo plans to offer the best prepaid plan in the market with the most affordable rates to call any time and to any number in Rwanda. Some calls on Tigo network go for as low as Rwf1 (0.002 cents). Tigo is also the first company to launch with a third generation of technology and currently run 3.5G among others. We also launched with the Number Management System – An innovative platform that lets new subscribers choose their number (as long as it is available). This has been very successful. Tigo Regional management helped assemble the core of the new management team. We also received lots of support from sister operations throughout the world. With this, the collective team worked hard to create and implement a successful market entry strategy. We focused on representing the brand accurately to the public. With Rwanda’s penetration rate as low as, one handset per eight Rwandans, we believe there is room for growth in the market. Some work has to be done to attain the levels of service, penetration and affordability enjoyed by neighboring countries. Tigo intends to be at the forefront of this change and evolution in Rwanda. The team is determined to achieve a large market share by building a strong commercial arm to build growing demand for Tigo products.
